Ilene Chazan, Ergo Body, San Marco

Ilene Chazan

The initials after Ilene Chazan’s name represent a variety of degrees and certifications, but they all boil down to this:  Ergo Body’s owner knows a LOT about the human body and how it works. And she puts that knowledge to good use every day as a physical therapist and Pilates instructor.
Known for her expertise, insight and compassion, Ilene works with a diverse clientele that encompasses all ages, fitness levels and stages of rehabilitation. She brings decades of education and experience to each encounter, and her unique approach combines the transformative and healing movement and manual skills of both physical therapy and Pilates.
With a true passion for helping people feel and function better, Ilene has been a physical therapist since 1990, a Comprehensive Polestar Pilates teacher since 2006, and a Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher (NCPT) since 2016. Before moving to Jacksonville with her family in 2001, she worked and taught at the University of California, San Francisco, one of the world’s leading hospitals.
Ilene has always embraced opportunities to expand her skills. In 1996, she completed a yearlong residency program in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy through Kaiser Permanente in Hayward, California. In 1997, she earned two certifications, one as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS), the other as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT). Other trainings and certifications – including kinesiotaping and use of the Oov –  have followed as Ilene continues to seek new information and techniques. But her proudest achievement is having helped countless clients reclaim or enhance their health, strength and functionality.
Prior to founding Ergo Body in 2014, Ilene practiced in the outpatient department at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and worked with clients at a local Pilates studio for several years. She is married, and her daughter – a dancer – is a frequent client.

Professional Qualifications

In addition to more than 27 years’ experience as a physical therapist and 13 years as a Pilates instructor, Ilene has earned the professional certifications below, through continued study and practice. Additionally, she is certified in kinesiotaping and all available levels of Oov training. (The Oov, a relatively new rehab, fitness and performance tool, is described on the Pilates page.)

2016 – NCPT (Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher)

The Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher (NCPT) certification – the only third-party certification in the Pilates field – is conferred by the Pilates Method Alliance, the worldwide professional association for Pilates teachers. (This credential was formerly known as the PMT.)

1997 – Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (FAAOMPT)

The AAOMPT is a professional organization of physical therapists that promotes excellence in orthopedic manual physical therapy practice, education and research. To earn the FAAOMPT designation, a physical therapist must demonstrate advanced clinical, analytical, and hands-on skills in the treatment of musculoskeletal orthopedic disorders.

1990 – Master of Science in Physical Therapy (MSPT) – Boston University

“I am proud of the skills I’ve developed over many years of study and practice, and I love helping people heal, reach their optimal function, and feel good in their bodies.”
